El Dia de los Muertos 2010

NUCO
Join us for Naperville's first annual El Día de los Muertos celebration on October 15th from 6-9pm at the Municipal Building in downtown Naperville!
This holiday focuses on celebrating the return of the departed friends and family members who are thought to be among us on the two first days of November. Traditions associated with these days include decoration of the cemetery, sugar skulls, bright colored marigolds, and home altars that include the favorite foods and beverages of the deceased. Although it occurs right after Halloween, el Día de los Muertos is a day of celebrating the relationships that death cannot interrupt, and has little in common with the popular observance of Halloween. El Día de los Muertosis one of the largest and most important holidays celebrated in Latin America and by people of Latin American heritage in the United States.
If area residents and visitors are planning to attend the event, there are several activities planned and artwork that interprets the theme of el Día de los Muertos from Nuco, a featured Pilsen fine artist, will be on display in the lobby. There will be a Día de los Muertos altar construction demonstration led by Patricia Carlos that will introduce people of all ages to the aesthetics and beliefs surrounding this holiday. Patricia will also lead a traditional mask painting workshop for the first 20 youths who would like to participate. A reception will include the Mexican folklore group Los Fandangueros and traditional Mexican cuisine. The artwork will be on display from October 15th until November 13th.
