More about the Naperville Forum for Business and the Arts
The Naperville Forum for Business and the Arts began as the ACA, which, if I recall correctly stands for Art and Culture Advocates - but honestly, I could be mistaken it was so long ago. I do remember it was a temporary name and the overall feeling was that it didn't encompass the intended feeling we were trying to convey. I have looked through the many files I had on the history of theses workshops that all have the same basic mission: enrich and uplift... specifically through education and community building for artists and cultural nonprofits. It has been and still is the intention to create better practices through conversations and leadership, simplify messages, unify local organizations and possibly create greater funding opportunities or at least provide grant writing workshops. The name then changed to the Naperville Council for Business and the Arts and I and a few others went to meet in Chicago and spoke with the Americans for the Arts in NYC. This became too large an endeavor without the right team backing it up. The group disbanded and workshop was renamed the Naperville Forum for Business and the Arts so that all who participated would be a part of the new open forum.
During the second year of workshops, which are held quarterly, the audience feedback was MORE MARKETING WORKSHOPS! It was overwhelming - artists and nonprofits wanted to learn how to get their name out there - not just for awareness, but to sell and create sustainability. It was very good and the turn out remained consistent.
The NFBA remains solid in it's mission to get feedback and provide business workshops for artists and cultural nonprofits. We are very interested in what artists and cultural nonprofits want most to help accelerate the business aspects of their work and how we can help create networking opportunities also. So far, these workshops have been free and open to the public. We've been very lucky in the past to have so many great sponsors. Some video of recent workshops and notes are in our blog archive and, as always, feel free to make requests for topics to cover at meetings. We do our best to try to keep the engine going. If any of the notes or items below are helpful, feel free to use it. Some are novelty, such as the posters and photos. Some are more substantial including notes from the very beginning and some downloadable docs from the AA website. What strikes me as I reread through all this is that it is supposed to be fun or fulfilling or both. It is supposed to have a spiritual nature, if you will, meaning that it comes from the heart and intends to spread good feelings. I put the information out there in case anyone wants to learn from my mistakes so they aren't replicated and that hopefully there is a greater appreciation for the arts and artists and other cultural studies. ~Michelle LeBlanc
